About
Alba Lara
Dr. Alba Lara views each client she works with as a whole person and values everyone’s different backgrounds and needs. As Head of Psychiatry at Harbor Health, she leads a group of behavioral health care managers working with the primary care health teams offering integrated and collaborative care. Her sub-specialty is consultation-liaison psychiatry (C-L) or psychosomatic medicine, a practice considering the interaction between a person’s physical health and psychological factors. Dr. Lara has worked in a variety of psychiatry settings and has specialized training in Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), a therapy designed for people with personality disorders, and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), a medical treatment used for people with severe depression. At the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, Dr. Alba is a volunteer faculty member with the Dell Med Human Rights Program and has a specific interest in working with Spanish-speaking clients, underserved clients, and asylum seekers. She is determined to advocate for their journeys in the medical and mental health systems. When members come to see her, she hopes they will recognize her acceptance of all of their values and beliefs and how she sees each person as a unique individual. Outside of her psychiatry practice, you may find Dr. Lara walking on one of Austin’s many trail systems or dancing to a Latin beat in a Zumba class.
